During the project, the potential of solar, wind, biomass and geothermal energy in Latvia will be analysed, and research will be carried out to develop innovative power-electronics technologies for energy production involving renewable energy resources (RES) and storage, as well as new methods for hydrocarbon production. The potential of shallow geothermal resources in Latvia will also be assessed.

The project has the following activities:

• Creation of a demonstration microgrid, including photovoltaic panels and wind turbines with commercially available power-electronics converters. The demonstration system will be tested using the profile of a typical Latvian electricity consumer in cooperation with AS Sadales tīkls.
• Review and study of new technological solutions for compact, high-efficiency power-electronics converters for using RES with energy storage.
• Development of renewable hydrocarbon production with improved Fischer–Tropsch and catalytic-pyrolysis methods. Improved technologies for hydrocarbon synthesis from lignocellulosic biomass will be developed by creating micro- and mesoporous catalysts.
• Evaluation of economically justified solutions for biomass processing and resource availability in Latvia. Recommendations will be given for using methods to convert lignocellulose into high-value products such as biofuels. Activity No. 5 investigates the competitiveness of geothermal resources against heat-pump solutions and the potential for geothermal district heating.
