The aim of the project “Ecosystem of smart materials, photonics, technologies and engineering” is to create a co-creation research ecosystem to promote development in the RIS3 field of photonics, smart materials, related technologies and engineering systems, based on scientific discoveries and the commercialisation of research in Latvia. In this project, the leading research centres in Latvia — ISSP UL, RTU, UL, EDI — as well as other prominent national research organisations have joined forces to significantly increase cross-sectoral scientific activity between Latvia’s leading research institutes, creating a decentralised research cluster with shared facilities based on open-access laboratory principles, promoting cross-sectoral research activities, administrative capacity and innovation potential. The open-science approach and inter-institutional support for students and researchers will also be promoted. A joint research-commercialisation strategy 2030 will be created, providing a step-by-step handbook on company formation and administrative and financial matters. As a result of this project, new methods, technologies and product prototypes with high commercialisation potential will be created in cross-sectoral research activities and applications in the fields of photonics, microfluidics, smart materials and robotics / the Internet of Things.
