Within the project, through industrial research and experimental development, a non-economic project in Engineering and Technology (according to OECD — 2.7 and 2.8) will be carried out to develop an effective, environmentally friendly zero-waste technology for processing lignocellulose-containing biomass to produce biofuel and biogas. The advantages of the technology relate to the use of several innovative solutions — such as a specific enzyme mixture and surfactants in the production process — as well as the further processing of hydrolysis residues into biogas. To achieve the objective, available biomass resources will be evaluated, a specific enzyme mixture will be developed under laboratory conditions, technological research and optimisation of biogas production will be carried out, two technological prototypes will be developed, and system-demonstration activities will be conducted.
The specific objective of the project is, on the basis of experimental research, to create an effective and environmentally friendly zero-waste technology for the efficient processing of lignocellulose-containing biomass to produce biofuel and biogas, thereby increasing the amount of energy produced, reducing costs and promoting energy independence. To achieve this, the following activities will be carried out:
- Development of a specific enzyme product (mixture) that will simultaneously/sequentially ensure the hydrolysis of the cellulose and hemicellulose in the biomass into fermentable sugars and the processing of the remaining mass into biogas (Activity No. 1).
- Evaluation of various biomass resources to determine the optimal hydrolysis conditions and assess the quality of the developed enzyme product (Activity No. 2).
- Improvement of the anaerobic fermentation process by supplementing the raw material (lignocellulose) with surfactants of biological origin and the unprocessed enzymatic-hydrolysis residues after the separation of fermentable sugars (Activities No. 3.1 and 3.2).
- Determination of the boundary conditions of anaerobic fermentation (Activities No. 3.3 and 3.4).
- Development of new technologies based on the obtained research data (Activity 4: system for collecting fermentable sugars; Activity 5: system for zero-waste processing of digestate).
- Demonstration and publicity activities of the unified system and presentation of scientific results to increase commercialisation potential (Activities No. 6.1 and 6.2).
